While UPSC does the recruitment for Gazetted posts, SSC is entitled to hiring Non-gazetted staff for Central Government Departments and Ministeries. SSc conducts several exams in a year, but there are 2 exams, that are most popular among aspirants and these are SSC CGL and SSC CHSL.

While SSC CGL is for Graduates and SSC CHSL is for Candidates who have passed 10+2.

What is SSC CGL Exam?

CGL stands for  Combined Graduate Level Exam, in an All India Open Competitive Exam for Graduates,  which is conducted every year by SSC for hiring staff for Central Government Departments and Ministeries.

SSC CGL Exam is one the most sought after the exam to apply for Government Jobs in India. Every year, 35 to 40 lakh candidates apply for this exam. However, attendance is an issue in the exam as only 35 to 45 % candidates appears in this exam.

1) Posts: There are more than 30 posts in CGL Exam for which you can apply. All of these posts are Group B and C Posts having Grade Pay of Rs 2400, 2800, 4200, 4600 and 4800.

2) No. of Vacancies: Vacancies in SSC CGL Exam could range from 10,000 to 15,000, depending upon the requirement of participating Government Departments. Moreover, vacancies for CGL Exam are not informed at the time of Notification, rather the vacancy collection process goes on throughout the year and exact No. of vacancies are known when the selection process nears completion.

3) Salary: Salary for CGL posts will be as per the Recommendations of 7th Pay Commission. The Minimum Salary for a Group B post is Rs 42000 and for a Group C post is Rs 29000.

4) Selection Process: SSC has a 4 Tier selection process for CGL Exam. Tier-1 comprises of objective test of 1 hour, Tier-2 has 2 Papers of 200 marks each, Tier-3 is Descriptive Paper and Tier-4 comprises of Computer Skill test.

5) Exam Dates: SSC usually announces the exam schedule in advance by releasing an Exam Calendar. This SSC Exam Calendar has the Tentative Dates of All the upcoming SSC Exams for the coming year. The calendar is announced in the month of October / Nov. Going by the Trend of Last Few years, SSC CGL 2018  Tier-1 Exams are scheduled in the month of August.

When SSC CGL 2018 Notification will be announced?

Knowing the Exam Date in advance can be very helpful, if, you are preparing for Exam of CGL type. As far as exact exam date is concerned, it will be known only when the SSC CGL 2018 Notification gets announced.

We all have to wait until October 2017, before we get to know the Tentative Date of release of SSC CGL 2018 Notification, as it is when SSC releases its Exam Timetable for Upcoming SSC Exams 2018.

It is also a hard fact, that SSC most fails to announce the Notifications and conduct the Exam dates as per the Tentative Schedule as there a Frequent postpones, Delays etc. So, we can't be exactly sure at this time, when the Notification will be actually announced.

However, just before the release of Offical SSC CGL Notification, SSC do release a short Notice in the National Newspaper and this is when we get to know the announcement of Notification.

Going by the record of SSC in the last few years, it is expected that SSC CGL 2018 Notification will be announced in the month of March / April 2018 and Tier-1 Exams will start from August 2018

What is the Eligibility Criteria for SSC CGL 2018 Exam?

Applicants willing to appear in the SSC CGL 2018 Recruitment, must full fill the below-mentioned eligibility conditions

1) Nationality: Only Indian Citizens can apply for the SSC CGL Exam

2) Age Limit: SSC CGL has various posts and there is different age criteria for various posts. However, the General Age Limit for all posts is 18 to 32 years. In 2017 Exam, SSC has raised the maximum age Limit for Group B posts from 27 to 30 years.

Moreover, all the Group C posts have Age Limit of 18 to 27 years. 

3) Educational Qualification: The Basic Qualification Criteria for appearing in CGL 2018 Exam is Graduation only. There is no requirement of minimum percentage to apply for this exam.

These are some posts for which there is requirement of some additional Qualifications as given below

i) Jr. Statistical Officer: Graduation in any discipline with statistics as one of the subjects at degree level OR Graduate with 60% marks in Maths at 10+2 Level

ii) Assistant Audit Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer: Essential Qualification for these posts is Graduation. However, applicants having below mentioned Qualification will be given preference.

a) Charted Accountant Or Cost and Management Accountant OR
b) Company Secretary OR
c) Masters in Commerce OR
d) Masters in business Administration (Finance) OR 
e) Masters in Business Economics.

Note: Applicants appearing in their Final year's Exams can also appear, provided they have to show the proof of having passed the examination before 1st August 2018

Syllabus and Exam Pattern of SSC CGL 2018 Exam

The Selection process for the Recruitment to various posts in SSC CGL 2018 Exam, comprises of 4 Tiers and you have to pass each of these Tier' having obtained more than Cut off Marks to strengthen your position in the Final selection

1) Tier-1 : All those who apply for SSC CGL 2018 Exam, will have to appear in the Tier-1 Exam, comprises of 100 Objective Questions carrying 200 Marks with a composite time of 60 Minutes only.

2) Tier-2 Exam: Successful candidates in the Tier-1 stage, will be called for the Tier-2 exam, that consists of 2 compulsory papers and 2 addition papers, only for those who have applied for specific posts. 

Here is the Pattern of SSC CGL Tier-2 Exam 

3) Tier-3 (Descriptive Paper) : Qualified candidates in the  Tier-2 Exam, will have to appear in the Descriptive Paper of 100 Marks, having an overall duration of 1 hour.

You have to obtain a minimum of 33% marks to pass the Descriptive paper.  

4) Tier-4: This stage of Qualifying nature and applicants will have to appear for Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) / Computer Proficiency test. DEST is only for those, who have applied for the post of Tax Assistants in Income Tax Department.

How to Apply?

Applicants who are willing to apply for SSC CGL 2018 Exam, will have to wait for the announcement of Notification. It is expected that Official Notification may be announced in the month of March, April 2018.

Application Form: SSC accepts only online applications for the CGL Exam and as such you need to register online for CGL-2018 Exam at the Official website after the announcement of Online registration details.

Application fees:  Applicants need to pay only Rs 100, as application fee either through SBI Net Banking, Credit / Debit Card OR by depositing the fee through system generated challan form in SBI Branch.
